"Many people walk in and out of your life, But only true friends will leave their footprints in your heart...Learn from the mistakes of others, You can't leave long enough to make them all yourself...Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is mystery, Today is a gift" - Eleanor Roosevelt
Mentoring - "a mentor can enable you to see a higher goal of freedom for yourself spiritually, mentally, emotionally, relationally, in persistence and inconfidence, in creativity, and in a magnitude of other facets that make up your dream purpose-life" Larry Di Angi, author, Magic is in the extra mile
To Mentors - Mentors don't just mentor but also learn and benefit in the process. Proteges come with something unique, talents, abilities, information or things that will never have occured to you...things that may help you realize your dream purpose too. Similar to the princip of as you give, so you shall receive.
Minnesota Mentor-Protege
Majority of the East African immigrant students currently in colleges, universities and high schools in Minnesota obtained their early education in Northern Kenya. GCG has worked with schools Northern Kenya since 2002. We find many of the students struggling in making career choices. We are seeing a similar pattern among students of East African origin in Minnesota. They spend a long time in college due to frequent changes in their careers and luck of good counseling programs in the schools they attend. This is also in part due to gaps in the education system that does not address specific needs of the community. One of the ways in bridging these gaps is the implementation of Mentorship programs for students in their early college education.
Great NEWS:
Generation for Change has expanded its Mentorship program to the Minnesota community of East African origin. We are seeing thousands of students underserved in our public schools and colleges. Success in Education is pegged on interaction with role model. The agency started the Minneapolis area mentorship in light of experiences gained from mentorship project in Kenya's North Eastern Province schools.
The goal of the Mentor/Tutor Program is to show and give students real reason for succeeding in their educational careers. The program is designed in a way that students and adults have the opportunity to experience the success of tutoring and/or mentoring.
Currently, the focus is on Health Care professions. If you or someone you know is interested in Careers in Health Care, you have found a powerful tool to help you succeed. Generation for Change will guide you through how to become a Physician, a Pharmacist, a Dentist, a Nurse and many other professions within Health Care.
Testimonials below from mentee students;
“By shadowing a pharmacist, I got a clear picture of what a career in pharmacy is like. I am more confident than ever that I can be a pharmacist” Gibril, Chem/biology major from University of Minnesota
“Great program. I learnt a lot. In looking at how Docs read 3D/4D Brain images, I was surprised how easy they looked from real life perspective. I felt so confident and the ringing message for me was – this is certainly do-able. Overall, the encounter was very informal and we discussed a variety of things from premedical, to cost of medical school, to academic preparation and practice in medical school. I truly appreciated Dr. Yock’s commitment to making the opportunity of prospecting medical school very real. Also, my thanks goes to the Generation for Change (GCG) who made this possible for me and many other students.” Abdinasir, Microbiology major and Premedical student – University of MInnesota
